Gravelbourg Library

Architecture

This magnificent library was once the chapel in the Convent of Jesus and Mary in Gravelbourg, SK. The sisters dedicated 55 years to teaching young girls and boys. In 1970, they decided to sell the Convent to the Gravelbourg School Board.

The former Convent is now a multipurpose education center housing the Gravelbourg Elementary School, the Chinook Regional Library and the Cypress Hills Community College.  The library is home to a statue of the Holy Mother made in Italy, as well a collection of paintings (reproductions) of masters of the renaissance period.

You can imagine how difficult it was for me, as a child, to pay attention to my research whilst being surrounded by such beautiful architecture and formidable paintings.

Entranced by rural and urban decay. I am drawn to these forlorn sites because they emote conflicting sentiments of beauty and disintegration.
