These images were shot in the basement of the former Couvent Jésus Marie, also known as the Gravelbourg Elementary School. My earliest memories of this school are of our kindergarten class, which was located on the left at the end of the long hallway.
The space where the old fridges stand was and is still used by the maintenance and custodial staff. As a child, this area was out-of-bounds, so I had no idea what was in there. Imagine my surprise when I found these beautiful antique wooden doors within this long rectangular room.
The auditorium sits beneath the ornate library. Many plays, presentations, concerts, recitals, oratory contests were held in this space. We also used this space for our phys-ed classes. In the winter we would have intramural floor hockey where we could get out of the cold at lunch time to either play or watch our fellow school mates play floor hockey.
While I was a student at this school, the girls and boys had separate entrances into their respective coat/boot room. When it was time to go to class, we would line up according to grade to make our way up the student stair cases (in silence) to our respective class room.
